INTERNSHIP at TNO : PATHOLOGY OF ANCHORAGE FOR NATURAL STONE FAÇADE PANELS

Location: Delft
Hours: Full-Time (40 / week)

Description

When analyzing the safety of heritage buildings, the focus is usually on the stability of load-bearing structural elements. Little or no attention is then given to the performance of structural elements whose main purpose is to support the façade panels or decorative objects, such as gables and statues. Damage that can develop during the years due to aging or environmental effect in iron or steel anchorage can lead not only to deterioration of decorative objects that they support, but also to the detachment of significant material portions and their falling from the building. Even when not relevant for the stability of the building itself, such failures can endanger heritage value of the building and harm people in its surroundings. At the present, there is a lack of knowledge about the anchorage systems for natural stone façade panels used in modern heritage buildings in The Netherlands. This project is part of 4-years research project “MonumentenKennis”, which aims to increase level of this knowledge and develop an inspection protocol for dealing with heritage buildings that have anchorage problem.

The assignment

The intern will study three aspects of the project: anchorage type, their pathology and practical issues that are encountered by owners and/or restauration companies. To fulfil this, intern will travel to different locations in Netherlands to make inspections of several heritage buildings that were built after 1950’s and analyze them as case studies.

Requirements

We are looking for a student in the last phase of the Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering studies. Sensitivity and passion for the heritage structures are the values that we see important for performing well during this project. Knowledge and/or experience of structural analysis of heritage structures is considered as big advantage. Professional proficiency of Dutch language is obligatory pre-request, since the intern will speak on daily basis with owners of buildings, heritage consultants and small companies owners in Dutch. Also, reporting and dissemination of results will be in Dutch. Communication with project members will be both in Dutch and English. The interviews for the internship will be conducted both in Dutch and English.

The internship should last for minimum 3 months and be completed before 1st August 2018.
